You want the car to be fine. Everyone wants the car to be fine. That’s why Houstonians often report turning the key in a soaked Civic “just to see” and then hearing the worst sound of the week.
Water in a cylinder does not compress. The starter will try anyway. Connecting rods bend. Airbags and body computers sit in places that stay wet after the seat looks dry. A modern car is a network of boxes. Floodwater isn’t a beverage they like.
If the cabin got wet, or the car sat in a street that was over the rocker panel, treat it as flooded. Tow it. Photograph it. Call comprehensive. Don’t perform a miracle in a garage that still smells like Brays.
Do this now
- Do not turn the key, press the start button, or jump the battery “to dry it out.”
- Photograph the car in place: water line on the body, interior carpets, and the stall or street around it.
- Call the auto insurer and ask for a flood or comprehensive claim. Get a claim number.
- Arrange a tow to a shop the insurer agrees to, or to a storage lot they name. Do not drive it there.
- Leave a note on the dash that it is flooded so a helpful neighbor does not start it for you.
What “starting it” actually risks
Hydrolock is the famous one: water in the engine, bent internals, sudden stop. The quieter kill is electrical. Modules under seats and in kick panels corrode for months. A car that “runs fine” on Tuesday can eat an airbag warning and a dead cluster by next month.
If you already started it, stop. Write that down for the insurer. Do not start it a second time to “make sure.”
Push starts and “just accessories” are still starts
Turning the car to accessory mode still wakes computers. A push down a Midtown ramp still turns the engine. Jump boxes are not a drying tool. Disconnecting the battery can be a shop decision. It is not a TikTok fix you invent in standing water.
If a shop wants to “try it in the lot,” ask the insurer first. Some want it inspected dead.
Where Houston cars take water
Underpasses on I-10, 59, 288, and 610. Apartment lots along bayous. Downtown garages. Office parks in the Energy Corridor after sheet flow. A car can be flooded in a stall you thought was “uphill” because the drain backed up.
If you waded to the car and the water was at the door card, you have your answer. You do not need to test the theory with the ignition.
What you can do instead of cranking
Get IDs, the booster seat, the work laptop, and the medication if you can open a door without standing in live water near a downed line. Photograph. Lock it if that still matters. Then walk away.
A flooded car is a claim and a tow. It is not a personality test.
