Claim

After Houston floods, restoration vans show up before the water finishes falling. Some of those companies are real IICRC shops that will extract, demo wet drywall, and set drying equipment. Some are storm chasers who want a signature and a chunk of your insurance check.

This hub is the hiring desk: extraction, roofing/tarping, debris haul-off, and the scam patterns that repeat every time the bayous come up.

Houston restoration threads after Harvey kept repeating the same clock: document the waterline, get water out, open wet walls, dry the framing, keep moisture logs. A few household fans in a closed wet room is not that job. Street water is contaminated. Porous carpet, pad, drywall, and baseboards usually leave.

We do not publish a ranked vendor list. Crews change. Licenses lapse. A company that did honest work after Harvey is not automatically the right call this week. Check TDLR, then the Houston shops below. The list is a Google ratings snapshot, not an endorsement.

What good looks like on day one

  1. They photograph standing water and the water line before they move anything.
  2. They explain category of water (clean / gray / black). Street flood and sewage are not "clean."
  3. They extract, then open walls only as far as the moisture meter says. Not the whole first floor "just in case" unless the meter backs it up.
  4. They set air movers and dehumidifiers and tell you what the grain-depression target is. If they cannot talk moisture, they are guessing.
  5. You get a written work authorization that you can read. No "sign now or we leave" theater.

Houstonians often report that the companies who rushed the authorization also rushed the demo and then vanished when the adjuster asked for daily moisture logs. Ask for those logs up front.

Before anyone cuts drywall

Call the carrier. Get a claim number. Photograph rooms, serial numbers, and the water line. Then talk to a restoration shop. Signing a blank work auth before the adjuster arrives can box you into a scope your policy will not pay. You can still start emergency extraction (the water has to leave) without signing away contents pack-out, reconstruction, and a year of storage.

Words you will hear: IICRC (the training/standard body), Xactimate (the estimating software insurers live in), pack-out, ALE, mitigation vs rebuild. If an estimator cannot explain the line items, slow down.

Texas Department of Insurance storm pages tell flood policyholders to call the carrier the same day. NFIP deadlines are on the policy and on FEMA's claims page, not on a remembered Harvey date. If you cannot find the number on the dec page, TDI's help line is 800-252-3439. Confirm hours on tdi.texas.gov.

Say this out loud before anyone cuts rock: "Please give me the claim number and the proof-of-loss deadline." Then: "Are you licensed and insured, and can I have the written scope and moisture log?" For mold, look up the person on TDLR's mold page. In Texas the assessor and the remediator are often supposed to be separate shops.

Roofers, tarps, haulers

If the roof is open, a blue tarp tonight matters more than a shingle color conversation. Emergency tarping and board-up are temporary repairs. Keep every receipt. Insurers expect you to prevent more damage. They do not expect you to pay a $8,000 cash deposit to a truck with out-of-state plates.

City and county will eventually publish debris rules: what they pick up, which side of the walk, how to separate appliances. Until that notice, do not dump in a bayou, a vacant lot, or someone else's dumpster. Harris County and Houston both fine illegal dumping, flood or no flood.

Hard no list

  • Door knockers who "happened to be on your street" with a contract on a tablet.
  • Demands for full payment in cash before work starts.
  • No physical local address, no license number, no proof of insurance.
  • They want you to skip the claim and "just use our guy for the check."
  • High-pressure "we only have this crew until tomorrow."

Report contractor fraud patterns to the Texas Attorney General consumer complaint form, TDLR if they claimed a license, and Houston 311 or Harris County if they dumped debris. Keep names, truck plates, and the pitch in writing. Houstonians often report the worst deals were signed on the porch the same afternoon: a fat cash deposit, an assignment of benefits, or a promise that "we handle the insurance." Walk back inside. Get a second written estimate.
