Water in the house

Photo the line, get wet material out, dry the studs. Then call a crew if it is sewage or the panel is wet.

Water in house

  • Photograph the waterline and every room before you move or discard anything. r/houston
  • Pull wet carpet, pad, and mattresses as soon as it is safe. r/houston
  • Cut out wet drywall and wet insulation without delay once documented. r/houston
  • Flood-cut drywall high enough to clear the wet zone (often about 2-4 ft), then open the cavity to air. r/HomeImprovement
  • Remove baseboards so air movers can hit the bottom of the studs. r/homeowners
  • Run air movers and dehumidifiers until framing moisture is in range, not just a few box fans. r/houston
  • Buy or borrow a moisture meter and check studs before closing walls. r/houston
  • Do not close walls or paint until wood is confirmed dry. r/HomeImprovement
  • Treat floodwater as contaminated, boots, gloves, eye protection, respirator. r/houston
  • Keep kids and pets out of the work zone until wet materials are out. UTHealth
  • Save receipts for fans, dehumidifiers, dumpsters, PPE, and hotels. r/personalfinance
  • Before a storm, cut tall grass and clear drains if you can. r/houston
  • Watch for snakes in drains if you remove toilets or tubs during gut-out. r/houston
  • Follow current city/county debris set-out rules via 311, do not invent set-out days. Houston 311
  • Pump out standing water and extract before finish demo when power and structure allow. r/houston

Mold

  • Do not rely on bleach to kill mold inside porous studs, drywall, or insulation. r/houston
  • Do not bleach studs and call the cavity clean, remove wet porous material and dry the framing. r/houston
  • Skip chlorine bleach on porous flood damage; prioritize removal and drying. r/houston
  • Keep indoor humidity low while drying (posts cited aiming near 40% RH if AC works). r/houston
  • Do not run HVAC until ducts and the system are checked after contaminated floodwater. UTHealth
  • Never mix bleach with ammonia or other cleaners while remediating. ABC13
  • For significant mold, use a TDLR-licensed mold assessor (separate from remediator when required). TDLR
  • If cough, asthma, or headache worsens in the wet house, leave and get medical advice. CDC

Check live

The first day after a Houston flood is ugly and simple. Water leaves or mold gets a head start. Heat and humidity here do the rest. You do not need a perfect plan. You need pumps, a wet/dry vac, fans that actually move air out, and a hard stop when the job is sewage, electrical, or bigger than your crew.

This is the DIY + "call them" hub. Restoration companies live on the providers page. Health and sewage live here because they decide whether you should even be in the room.

The sequence Houston crews and neighbors kept repeating after Harvey: people and pets first; power only from a dry location; photograph the waterline and contents; tell the insurer; then pull saturated porous stuff; then dry with real airflow and a dehumidifier. Do not close walls or run a wet HVAC because you are tired of looking at studs.

Power and boil-water first. If the panel took water, stay out and call a licensed electrician. If the city or your MUD posted a boil-water notice, treat tap water as unsafe until they lift it. Check Houston Public Works notices, Houston OEM, and CenterPoint. A 2022 lift page is not today's status. County mold and sewage questions go to Harris County Public Health. Outside the city, your MUD or water authority is the desk, not Houston 311.

First 24 hours

  1. Photo and video every room, the water line, and serial numbers before you haul a sofa to the curb. Claims die on missing proof.
  2. Kill power to wet rooms if you can do it from a dry panel. If you cannot, leave it and get an electrician.
  3. Pull standing water with a pump or wet vac. Neighbors often share equipment on the same block. Label what you borrow.
  4. Get wet drywall and soaked insulation out if the water was more than a splash. Closed wet walls in September in Houston is how you grow a problem you can smell from the driveway.
  5. Run air movers to push wet air out. Box fans in a closed house just stir humidity. Dehumidifiers help once bulk water is gone.

Houstonians often report they kept carpet "to see if it dried" and spent the next month sick. Street flood is not clean. If it came in from the curb or the bayou, treat textiles as a loss unless a restoration shop can actually wash them.

When DIY becomes the wrong call

  • Sewage or black water across a living space.
  • Water in the electrical panel, outlets, or HVAC closet.
  • A slab home with water under the floor that you cannot reach.
  • You or anyone in the house has asthma, is pregnant, is very young, or is older and already sick.
  • The water line is above a couple of feet and you are one person with a shop vac.

Calling extraction is not failure. It is how you keep the house from becoming a rebuild. Read the stop-DIY piece before you spend another night ripping rock without a respirator.

Health, short version

Houston floodwater mixes bayou, street runoff, and often sewage. That is category 3 / black water in restoration language. Gloves, boots, eye protection, and an N95 or better while you demo. Cuts go dirty fast. Tetanus status matters. Poison Control can talk you through cleaner mix-ups. Do not mix bleach with ammonia or with the mystery bottles that floated out of the laundry room.

Kids should not sleep in a damp first-floor room "for one more night" if you can help it. Damp plus Houston heat is a respiratory stack. If the house smells like a swamp, that is data. CDC's flood cleanup page and EPA's mold page both say the same thing in plainer words: get wet materials out, wear a respirator, and keep kids and anyone with asthma away from the demo. UTHealth Houston published a Harvey-era cleanup FAQ that is still a useful checklist. Confirm it against today's CDC page before you treat a 2017 PDF as the last word.

Bleach is not a cure for a wet wall cavity. If you get a headache or your chest tightens, leave the room. That is not toughness. That is the contaminant doing what floodwater does.

Do this next 1. Document, then pull water, then open airflow. In that order.
2. Follow First 24 hours.
3. If the water was sewage or you are over your head, switch to Houston restoration crews.
4. Roof still open: tarp and board-up. Curb pile: debris rules. Is the bayou still rising: Harris County gauges.

Articles in this hub

Cleaning mud and silt without wrecking finishes

Silt is abrasive. Hose it off hard surfaces, do not grind it into hardwood, and keep the muck out of the drains you still need.

Dehumidifiers and fans: how many and where to point them

Fans move air. Dehumidifiers remove water. In Houston you need both, pointed at wet surfaces, not at your face.

Document everything before you throw it away

Shoot it, list it, then toss it. A wet couch with no photo is a shrug from the adjuster.

Electrical panels and water: do not DIY this part

If the panel, meter, or outlets went underwater, you do not experiment. Stay off the wet floor and call a licensed electrician.

First 24 hours: pull water, move stuff, start airflow

Get standing water out, lift contents off the slab, and start dry air. Houston humidity will not wait for the weekend.

Hardwood, laminate, and carpet: salvage vs rip-out

Carpet pad after floodwater is trash. Laminate usually is too. Hardwood might live if you dry it fast and it was not sewage.

Shop vacs, pumps, and what to borrow from a neighbor

Borrow a pump for depth, a shop vac for the film, and extension cords that are not sitting in the puddle.

Wet drywall, insulation, and when DIY becomes a mold factory

Wet gypsum and soaked batts in Houston heat become a farm. Cut, bag, and dry the cavity, or stop and call extraction.

What not to mix: bleach myths in flood cleanup

Bleach does not fix wet drywall. Never mix it with ammonia or many toilet cleaners. Soap, remove, then disinfect if you must.

When to stop DIY and call extraction

Stop when the water is sewage, the panel is wet, the house is more than a room, or you cannot drop the humidity.

Emotional crash after the adrenaline fades

The shake comes when the pumps stop. That is normal. Use 988 or Disaster Distress if you cannot get back to yourself.

Floodwater categories: clean, gray, and black water

Clean is a supply line. Gray is dirty household water. Black is sewage or bayou. Houston street flood is usually black.

Hiring mold assessment vs trusting the restoration quote

A restorer can price a dry-out. An independent assessment is for when you need a second set of eyes, not a bigger invoice.

Kids, asthma, and sleeping in a damp house

Do not put kids to sleep in a still-wet house. Damp air plus Houston mold clocks is an ER visit waiting.

PPE that actually helps in a flooded Houston home

Boots, gloves, goggles, and a real respirator. Shorts and flip-flops in bayou water are how you collect infections.

Respiratory risk while tearing out wet materials

Wet drywall dust plus sewage plus Houston mold is a lung problem. Respirator, kids out, HVAC off if it is pulling that air.

Sewage backup in the house: immediate steps

Get people out of the waste, stop adding water to the drains, and treat this as black water. Do not shop-vac sewage barefoot.

Tetanus, cuts, and standing water injuries

Flood water hides steel. Clean the wound with safe water, cover it, and get medical advice on tetanus. Do not tough out a red streak.

Well water and private systems after inundation

If floodwater reached the wellhead or the private system, do not drink it. Use bottled water until you disinfect and test.

When mold can wait vs when it cannot

Surface fuzz on a thing you will trash can wait an hour. Growth in the HVAC, the wall cavity, or a kid's room cannot.
