The pantry is a mix of wet cardboard and one unopened peanut butter. The usual store is dark or stripped. Kids still need calories that will stay down.

This is a logistics hour, not a recipe blog. Shelf-stable, familiar, and enough water if a boil notice is on.

You are allowed to ask for help before the meltdown. That is the point of 211 and the people on your street.

Do this now

  1. Call 211 and ask about food, formula, and water distribution near you today.
  2. Inventory what is still dry and sealed. Separate it from anything the flood touched.
  3. Text two neighbors before you drive across town on a rumor of bread.
  4. If a boil-water notice is on, do not mix formula or rinse fruit in tap water.

What kids will actually eat today

Familiar and safe beats a perfect plate. Shelf-stable milk, nut butters, bananas if you can find them, oatmeal you can make with boiled or bottled water, canned fruit, tortillas that stayed dry. Skip the raw chicken plan. If power is out, you are not running an oven full of experiments on a generator you placed badly. Keep portions small if stomachs are off from heat and stress.

Where food usually shows up

211, city and county sites, Red Cross (1-800-733-2767), churches, and the big grocers when they reopen. Houston stores are uneven after a flood. One H-E-B is a warehouse of ice and the next zip is empty. Confirm hours before you burn gas. METRO may be running when streets on your drive are not. If you have no car, say that when you call 211 so they do not send you to a site you cannot reach.

Formula, baby food, and stubborn eaters

Do not dilute formula to stretch it. Do not switch water sources in the middle of a boil notice without reading the label and the notice. If you are out, 211 and pediatric ERs have seen this movie. Ask. Diapers and wipes are the other half of the same run. Do not trade down to a flooded can of something with a swollen lid because you are ashamed to call. Call.

Verify live. Status changes hourly. Confirm distribution sites with 211, the city, or Harris County before you drive. Store hours and road closures change through the day.

Do this next

  1. CenterPoint status and when food in the fridge is gone
  2. Generator placement so you do not kill someone with CO
  3. Water cleanup hub

What Houstonians learned after Harvey-style floods

Outages last longer than the first CenterPoint guess. Use their outage center, not a screenshot. A boil-water notice is not automatically citywide. Follow your utility or MUD until they lift it. Generators, grills, and cars stay outside, away from windows. A garage kill is carbon monoxide.

Official checks (verify live)

Status, maps, and claim portals change by the hour. Open the org site. Do not trust a screenshot from last night.

  • CenterPoint outage map Action Center outage desk for CenterPoint territory. The older outage-center and outage-map paths returned 404 on 2026-09-21. Ignore viral ETAs. Downed line: stay back, call 911 and CenterPoint.
  • Houston Public Works notices Boil-water and main-break posts. A 2022 lift page is not today's status. houstontx.gov/publicworks returned 404 on 2026-09-21. Recheck here or Houston OEM, then 311.
  • City of Houston 311 Debris rules, water, and non-emergency city services. Not a substitute for 911. Outside the city, this is the wrong desk.
  • 211 Texas Shelter, food, utility, and recovery referrals. Dial 211 if the sites lag.
