Coolers buy you a day. They do not replace a fridge if you keep opening them like a snack stand.

After Houston floods, ice becomes a hunt. Some of it is official. Some of it is a guy selling bags from a cooler in a flooded parking lot. Buy the first kind when you can.

Put the insulin and the breast milk in the best cooler. The soda can be warm.

Do this now

  1. Pack one cooler for meds and perishable food that is still safe. Drain meltwater so food does not sit in a lake.
  2. Call 211 or check city and county posts for ice, water, and charging locations today.
  3. Do not leave a cooler in the Houston sun and call it a plan. Shade, towel, keep it shut.
  4. Share ice on the block if you have extra. Hoarding two wet bags while a neighbor loses insulin is a choice.

How to run a cooler like it matters

Block ice lasts longer than cubes. Keep it closed. Separate raw meat from ready food if you still have raw meat you are about to cook. Once the ice is a warm soup, the clock on leftovers is over. Dry ice has rules: ventilation, no touch, not in a tiny sealed room. If you do not know those rules, stick to regular ice.

Community points are not a secret menu

When the city, county, or a grocer stands up ice and water, they post it. 211 can read the list to you. Churches do this too, and they are often faster on a single block. Confirm before you drive across a still-wet feeder road. If you have no car, say so. Some sites will tell you about METRO or a closer drop.

Charging next to the ice line

Official charging and cooling centers show up in the same briefings. Bring the cable you actually own. Do not leave the phone on a table and wander. Take turns on the block if one house still has power and they offered. Pay them in gas money or food if you can. Do not camp on their only outlet with a gaming laptop.

Verify live. Status changes hourly. Confirm ice, water, and cooling or charging sites with 211, Houston 311, or Harris County before you go. Locations move.

Do this next

  1. CenterPoint status and when food in the fridge is gone
  2. Generator placement so you do not kill someone with CO
  3. Water cleanup hub

What Houstonians learned after Harvey-style floods

Outages last longer than the first CenterPoint guess. Use their outage center, not a screenshot. A boil-water notice is not automatically citywide. Follow your utility or MUD until they lift it. Generators, grills, and cars stay outside, away from windows. A garage kill is carbon monoxide.

Official checks (verify live)

Status, maps, and claim portals change by the hour. Open the org site. Do not trust a screenshot from last night.

  • CenterPoint outage map Action Center outage desk for CenterPoint territory. The older outage-center and outage-map paths returned 404 on 2026-09-21. Ignore viral ETAs. Downed line: stay back, call 911 and CenterPoint.
  • Houston Public Works notices Boil-water and main-break posts. A 2022 lift page is not today's status. houstontx.gov/publicworks returned 404 on 2026-09-21. Recheck here or Houston OEM, then 311.
  • City of Houston 311 Debris rules, water, and non-emergency city services. Not a substitute for 911. Outside the city, this is the wrong desk.
  • 211 Texas Shelter, food, utility, and recovery referrals. Dial 211 if the sites lag.
