White Oak and Little White Oak cut through older Houston and newer infill like they have somewhere to be. If your house took water near the park, the Heights edge, Timbergrove, Lazybrook, Near Northside, or Independence Heights, the crest may have already happened. The slab and the pier-and-beam crawl have not.

This is after-action. The hike-and-bike trail will be a silt story for days. Your job is the structure, the outlets, and the claim, not a debate about the last bond project. Don’t wait on a neighborhood meeting to start.

Watch the White Oak gauges anyway. A second pulse can still move through after a west-side dump.

Do this now

  1. Check White Oak and Little White Oak stages on the Harris County Flood Warning System before you walk kids back to a first-floor room.
  2. Photograph the water line on the pier-and-beam skirt or the slab, then the interior rooms.
  3. If you have a crawlspace, do not send someone under the house until the water is gone and the power is safe.
  4. Open flood and homeowners claims as they apply. Street water in the parlor is flood. A failed roof is a different call.
  5. Bag wet insulation and gloves like the water mixed with street runoff, because it did.

Pier-and-beam is not a free pass

Older houses near White Oak often sit up. That saves some living floors and still soaks the ducts, the wiring runs, and anything stored under the house. Photograph the crawl opening. If the water went under, assume the duct wrap is a loss until a qualified person says otherwise.

Do not “dry it with a shop fan aimed at the lattice” and call it done. Houston humidity will finish the job in the dark.

Infill slabs and townhomes

Newer slabs and townhome rows near the bayou parks can take a clean-looking four inches that ruins the flooring and the lower cabinets. Shared breezeways move water down the row. Photograph your unit and the common hall. Tell the HOA in writing. Do not wait for a board meeting next month.

If the builder’s warranty people show up, still open your own insurance file. Warranty and flood claims are not the same desk.

Little White Oak’s tighter streets

Independence Heights and the Little White Oak stretches can feel like a ditch flood even when the main White Oak map is the one on TV. Check the gauge closest to you, not the downtown-adjacent park camera.

Report blocked inlets to 311. Do not assume a county crew saw your cul-de-sac because they were on Yale or Airline.

Re-entry on popular streets

These neighborhoods fill with looky-loos and contractors after a crest. Keep a sign-in note for anyone who enters. Photograph the house before the first “free inspection.” Houstonians often report a missing generator off a porch on a pretty street that still had no power.

If you evacuated north and you are coming back down I-45 or 610, check TxDOT closures. A dry house does not help if you drown the car in a feeder.

Verify live. Status changes hourly. White Oak and Little White Oak stages live on the Harris County Flood Warning System. City 311 and Harris County OEM for re-entry and debris. Confirm any “all-clear” against gauges, not a park parking lot.

What Houstonians learned after Harvey-style floods

Addicks and Barker are not the same as Brays or Greens. A controlled release can drop reservoir risk and raise water on Buffalo Bayou after the rain stops. Use the USACE dashboard and Harris County Flood Warning gauges for context. Use Ready Harris or city OEM for the actual go/stay order. Name a street only if you just checked a live official source.
