After Harvey, trucks from everywhere rolled into Houston. Some neighbors still thank those people. Some neighbors still hunt a phone that goes nowhere.
Out of state isn’t automatically a scam. No Texas license, no local address, and a rush for cash is.
You can hire help that came in for the flood. You hire them like an adult, not like a fan.
Do this now
- Ask where the company is based and where they are staying in Houston tonight. Vague is a no.
- Get a TDLR number or a clear explanation of who the licensed local partner is.
- Don’t pay the last draw until the work on the page is done and you have walked it.
- Keep the plate, the hotel, and a local contact in your notes.
- If they vanish mid-job, photograph the state of the house that day and stop sending money.
When visiting crews help
Local shops are booked. Water doesn’t wait. A well-run out-of-state team with a local license partner can pull wet drywall and set drying equipment when nobody else will answer. Check the work, not the accent. Pay for what’s done. Ask who warranties the seams when that truck is back in Louisiana.
When they vanish
Houstonians often report a crew that did day one, collected a draw, and didn’t come back after the next storm band or the next better-paying street. That’s why final money stays with you until the scope is finished. If they left tools, don’t hold them hostage. If they left a hole in the roof, tarp it and document. Then report it.
Who you tell
TDLR if a license was involved or should have been. The Texas Attorney General for the consumer complaint. The Harris County District Attorney if it looks like theft. Your insurer, so they know why the job stalled. The block chat, with facts, so the next street doesn’t pay the same deposit.
Verify live. Status changes hourly. Confirm any Texas license and a reachable local contact before the first payment. Plates and magnet signs are not references.
