You need a bed that is not a wet carpet. There are a few doors: a mass shelter, a Red Cross placement, a FEMA hotel program if a declaration lands, or your insurer’s additional living expenses.

None of those are automatic. Hotels along 610, the Medical Center, and the Energy Corridor fill while the bayous are still high.

Call with a claim number or a Red Cross case if you have one. Walking into a lobby and hoping for a voucher rarely works.

Do this now

  1. Call your insurer and ask whether additional living expenses or a hotel is authorized tonight.
  2. Call Red Cross Gulf Coast at 1-800-733-2767 and ask about shelter or hotel placement.
  3. If a federal declaration is active, start a FEMA registration at DisasterAssistance.gov or 1-800-621-3362.
  4. Book a refundable room with your own card if you can, then sort who reimburses it tomorrow.

Who pays for which bed

Red Cross Gulf Coast runs or staffs many congregate shelters. Hotel rooms through them are limited and usually tied to a case, not a vibe at the front desk.

FEMA hotel help, when it exists, follows a presidential declaration and a completed registration. It is not same-hour magic. Check DisasterAssistance.gov, not a text from a stranger.

Homeowners and renters insurance may cover a hotel under additional living expenses if the house is unlivable. Flood policies are pickier. Ask the adjuster in writing.

If you are paying cash tonight

Keep every folio. Photograph the room rate and the reason you could not stay home. That packet is how you get paid back later.

Ask the hotel about pet fees and a microwave if you have meds that need a fridge. Extended-stay places west of Beltway 8 sometimes have vacancies after the inner loop is gone.

If you cannot afford a room, go back to the live shelter list. Pride is cheaper than sleeping in a car on a still-flooded feeder.

Verify live. Status changes hourly. Hotel programs, Red Cross placements, and FEMA assistance change with each declaration update. Recheck Red Cross Gulf Coast, FEMA.gov / DisasterAssistance.gov, and your carrier before you count on a voucher.

  2. What to bring if you have 20 minutes to leave

What Houstonians learned after Harvey-style floods

Shelter lists go stale in an hour. Confirm capacity, intake, accessibility, transport, and pet rules on Ready Harris, the Red Cross finder, the Harris County dashboard, or 211 right before you leave. Harvey-era names like George R. Brown or NRG are history. Do not drive there because a 2017 thread said they were open. Ask: "Are you taking overnight intakes, pets, and accessible beds right now?"

Official checks (verify live)

Status, maps, and claim portals change by the hour. Open the org site. Do not trust a screenshot from last night.
