You can be competent and still not be okay. The house smells. The kids are loud. The adjuster has not called. Your hands are shaking over a shop vac.
That is a Houston flood week, not a personal failure.
If you are thinking about dying, or you cannot stop the panic, you do not have to wait until the drywall is out.
Do this now
- If you are in immediate danger of hurting yourself, call 911 or 988 now.
- Call or text 988 for a suicidal crisis or a panic that will not come down.
- Call Disaster Distress at 1-800-985-5990 for storm-related stress, even if you feel ‘fine enough.’
- Tell one human you trust that this day landed hard. Do not white-knuckle the next 12 hours alone.
Which line for which night
988 is the suicide and crisis lifeline. Use it for acute despair, not because you feel awkward asking a neighbor for a pump.
Disaster Distress Helpline is built for the week after a flood: sleep loss, rage, crying in the HEB parking lot. 1-800-985-5990.
211 can point to local counseling and casework when you also need a shelter or food box. It is slower than 988 when you are in a hole.
The Houston-specific pile-on
Heat, humidity, and a second night without power chew people up. Houstonians often report the worst crash after the first volunteer crew leaves and the house is still a shell.
Kids will melt down in the shelter gym. So will adults. That is not drama. That is a nervous system.
If alcohol is the only tool you have tonight, put the keys away and keep the hotline numbers in the phone. You can gut a house hungover. You cannot un-crash a truck on I-10.
