FEMA Individual Assistance is a registration, not a rumor. If a presidential declaration includes this area, you apply. If it doesn’t include you yet, you get the documents ready and you watch the official pages.
You can register online at DisasterAssistance.gov, through the FEMA app, or by calling 1-800-621-3362. That’s the list. A person at the door with a tablet and a “FEMA badge” isn’t the list.
Houstonians often report waiting for a neighbor to “get the link.” There is no secret link. There is a public site and a public number. Use them as soon as the county is listed.
Do this now
- Check DisasterAssistance.gov or 1-800-621-3362 to see if you can register for this event.
- If registration is open, apply today. Use the damaged home address, not a cousin’s dry house.
- Have an SSN, a phone that can receive a callback, insurance info, and a bank account for direct deposit if you want it.
- Write the FEMA application number on paper the second you get it.
- Do not pay anyone to register you. Do not give a bank PIN to a person on the porch.
What the application is asking
They want to know who you are, where the damage is, whether you own or rent, whether you have insurance, and how to reach you. They will ask about income and household members. Answer like a form, not like a speech.
If the house is in Houston and the mail goes to a P.O. box, still use the physical damaged address for the loss. A mismatch is how inspections bounce.
After you hit submit
You get an application number. Guard it. You may get a call from an inspector or a request to upload photos. Missed calls after a Houston flood are normal. Set the callback number to a phone that is actually charged.
If you have insurance, say so. FEMA will ask about those claims. Hiding a flood policy does not make a grant larger. It makes a later mess.
If the site says you cannot register yet
That usually means Individual Assistance is not open for this county, or the event is still being assessed. Keep photographing. File the insurance you do have. Use 211 and City of Houston or Harris County OEM channels for immediate needs.
Check again the next day. Declarations can add counties. Do not trust a text that says “FEMA is paying everyone in 770xx starting tonight.”
Language and access
You can ask for language help on the official line. If a family member translates, they should say your answers, not their theory of the house. If you have a disability or a medical device that failed in the flood, say that in the application. That is relevant. A speech about city drainage is not.
Seniors who do not do websites can use 1-800-621-3362. A trusted person can sit with them. A stranger who wants $200 “to get you in the system” can leave.
Verify live. Status changes hourly. Register only at DisasterAssistance.gov, the official FEMA app, or 1-800-621-3362. Confirm Harris County or City of Houston inclusion on FEMA.gov and Harris County OEM. Status changes.
