If the crew wants to box your life and roll it to a warehouse, that can save furniture. It can also lose a box of birth certificates in a climate-uncontrolled locker off the Gulf Freeway.
Pack-out means contents go out for cleaning or storage so the slab can dry. It is not a donation run. You still own every item until you say otherwise.
Ask where, how it is listed, and who pays the storage clock.
Do this now
- Walk the rooms and decide what is trash, what is cleanable, and what cannot be replaced.
- Photograph each item they touch, plus serial numbers on electronics.
- Get a written inventory with box counts before the truck leaves.
- Ask whether storage is climate-controlled. Houston heat cooks a wet sofa into a biology project.
What is worth packing out
Hard furniture that can be cleaned after gray or clean water might go. After black water or raw sewage, a lot of porous stuff is done. Soft goods from a bayou inundation are usually a loss.
Photos, hard drives, and legal papers get a different standard. Ask about freeze-dry or document recovery if the pile is that kind of pile. Do not let them toss a wet folder labeled ‘passport’ because it looks ugly.
Kids’ comfort items are your call. A restoration warehouse is not gentle.
The warehouse problem
Demand a chain of custody. Your name, the claim number, the unit, the date out. Photograph the truck tag.
Call the storage site in a week even if they say ‘we will call you.’ Houstonians often report contents that sat wet in a box because someone skipped the clean step.
If you can dry small, clean items at a relative’s dry house, that can be smarter than a mystery warehouse. Keep the receipts for that drive too.
Written scope or it did not happen
Houston restoration threads after Harvey kept landing on the same ask: written scope, moisture readings, and who pays if the adjuster cuts the line item. Street water is contaminated. Porous materials usually leave. Do not sign an assignment of benefits on the porch so a stranger can run your claim.
