The house is drier. The block is a grid of blue squares. That is Houston after a hard band. It is not a finished roof.
Tarps tear, pond, and cook. You need a written date for dry-in or replace, even if that date moves.
Do not let the emergency ticket become the only ticket. Adjusters close files. Plastic gets brittle.
Do this now
- Walk the yard after every rain and look at the tarp from the ground. Re-secure or recall the roofer if it lifted.
- Get a written permanent scope and a target start date. Put it in the claim file.
- Ask the carrier what they approved: repair, replace, code items. Do not guess.
- Keep living like the next cell will find the same hole, because it will.
How long a tarp can pretend
A tight tarp on a simple slope can buy you time measured in days to a few weeks if you watch it. A sloppy tarp on a flat or a valley can fail tonight. Houston sun is brutal on the cheap blue sheets people grab at the hardware store. If the attic is still dripping, the tarp is theater. Call them back.
Supply, crews, and the honest calendar
After a wide Harris County event, shingles, underlayment, and people who know how to use them get scarce. A shop that says “three days, whole roof” in that market is selling a feeling. Ask about material lead time. Ask whether they will dry-in with felt or synthetic first so you can drop the tarp. Get that sequence in the email.
Do not live under plastic and a shrug
If the kids’ room is still taped in contractor plastic a month later, you have a project-management problem, not a weather problem. Push the carrier and the roofer in writing. If the job stalls, you can get another bid. Photograph the tarp condition as it degrades so nobody claims you stopped mitigating. You did not. The plastic did.
Verify live. Status changes hourly. Confirm the approved scope in your claim portal and the roofer’s start date in writing. Re-check after the next named storm or heavy training-echo band.
