Every pickup on the feeder road suddenly “does roofs.” Some of them did, last month, in another state. Some of them will tarp you, take a deposit, and evaporate when the next county gets radar.

You need a hole covered and a name that still answers the phone on Friday. That is a smaller ask than a new architectural shingle color.

Call people who were here in May. Not the ones who found you on a porch.

Do this now

  1. Ask neighbors and your insurer for names they have actually used in Harris County.
  2. Check that the company has a local address, a way to verify insurance, and Houston or county registration if required.
  3. Request emergency tarping in writing with a date. Keep the quote.
  4. Do not pay a huge cash deposit to a crew you met today.

How to test if they are real

A physical shop or yard in the Houston area. A certificate of insurance you can call. Reviews that are older than this storm. Texas does not run a simple statewide “roofer license” the way people from other states expect, so you look at city contractor registration, TDLR for trades that are licensed, and whether they pull permits when the job needs one. If they sneer at permits on a full reroof, they are not your guy.

What “this week” honestly means

After a wide event, good crews are stacked. A honest shop will say tarp tomorrow, replace in weeks. A chaser will say full roof Thursday if you sign now. Believe the first one. A tight tarp and a dry attic beat a promise. If your insurer has a preferred vendor list, use it as a starting point, not a command, and still check the crew that arrives.

The porch pitch

Houstonians often report the same script: we were on your street, we have one slot, we need half down in cash, we work directly with your adjuster. That last line is how people sign away control of the claim. Take a card if you want. Do not sign on the hood. If they will not leave, you can say no and shut the door. 311 if they will not go.

Verify live. Status changes hourly. Confirm Houston contractor registration or Harris County permit rules for the scope they proposed. Check the company’s insurance certificate by calling the issuer, not by admiring the PDF.

Do this next

  1. Blue tarp basics that keep more water out tonight
  2. When roof leaks and flood are both happening

What Houstonians learned after Harvey-style floods

A roof leak and a flood are different claim stories. Photograph the tarp, the stain, the penetration, and when the weather hit. Get more than one written estimate. Check credentials. Do not sign an assignment of benefits on the porch. Tarp to stop more water, then line the permanent work up with the carrier and the permit desk.
