Do not leave the dog tied in the kitchen. Houstonians often report they thought they would be back by dinner. Bayou water does not run on your calendar.
Pet-friendly overnight space is limited. Some sites take crated animals in a separate room. Some only take service animals. Some send you to a partner kennel that is already full.
Call before you drive a panicked crate across a still-wet feeder.
Do this now
- Crate or leash every animal. Take food, meds, and a photo of each pet on your phone.
- Ask 211 and ReadyHarris for pet-friendly overnight sites, not just ‘a shelter.’
- Call Red Cross Gulf Coast at 1-800-733-2767 and ask how animals are handled at the site they name.
- If no shelter will take them, ask 211 about temporary kennel overflow and boarding partners.
What ‘pet friendly’ usually means
It often means dogs and cats in hard crates, not a free-roam rec gym. Birds, reptiles, and pit mixes get uneven answers. Ask the specific animal, not a generic yes.
Bring whatever vaccine record you can find. If you cannot find it, still go. A photo of the pet and your name on the crate matters more than a perfect folder.
Service animals are not pets under the rules. Say that clearly at intake if it applies.
When the shelter says no
Harris County and city animal facilities, plus some rescue groups, stand up temporary overflow after big floods. Those lists move. 211 is the cleanest first call.
Do not drop an animal at a random vet lobby and leave. Ask if they are a posted overflow site.
If a neighbor can take the crate on a dry second floor, that can buy you a night while you keep calling. Put your phone number on the crate in marker.
Verify live. Status changes hourly. Pet-friendly beds and kennel overflow change hourly. Recheck ReadyHarris, City of Houston OEM, Red Cross Gulf Coast, and 211 for the current animal rule at each site.
