The washer sat in water. The fridge is warm and smells like the storm. You’re allowed to hate them and still photograph the plates.
Serial numbers turn “a stainless fridge” into a specific machine. Adjusters and later buyers of your story like specific.
If the plate is mudded over, wipe a corner. Don’t toss the box first.
Do this now
- Photograph the full appliance, then the model/serial plate, then the water line nearby.
- Do the kitchen, laundry, water heater, HVAC closet, garage fridge, and window units.
- Write the numbers into your inventory sheet the same day.
- If you must haul out for health, keep the plate photo and a wide shot of the unit on the curb.
- Don’t let a hauler take something you haven’t shot unless it’s a safety issue.
What is worth the extra minute
Anything with a motor, a compressor, or a heating element that sat in floodwater. Refrigerators, washers, dryers, dishwashers, ranges if the base flooded, water heaters, air handlers, condensers in the yard, TVs that wicked water. A $20 lamp can be a photo and a line on the sheet. A $2,000 fridge needs the plate.
When the sticker is gone
Use old emails, the manual in a dry drawer, a listing photo from when you bought the house, or the installer invoice. A clear photo of the unit plus a receipt is still a claim. Don’t stamp a random serial from the internet onto your form. That’s how a file goes from sad to suspicious.
Landlord-owned vs yours
In a rental, the appliances may be the owner’s. Your contents claim is your stuff. Their dwelling or landlord policy is the machines they supplied. Photograph anyway. Both sides will ask. If you’re a commercial tenant, the lease decides who owns the walk-in and the oven. The plate still matters.
Verify live. Status changes hourly. Match serials to your inventory before the curb pile is gone. Once the hauler leaves, the plate leaves with it.
