Tearing wet gypsum makes a mist you cannot see well in a dark, power-out house. That mist is paper, silt, and whatever grew in 36 hours of heat.
If you already have asthma, you should not be the person on the saw. If kids are napping in the next room, move them.
This is the part where toughness gets people a week of wheeze and a mold bloom in the air handler.
Do this now
- Get children, elderly folks, and anyone with asthma out of the work zone.
- Wear a properly fitted respirator, not a paper comfort mask, when you open wet walls.
- Turn off HVAC if it will suck demo dust into the ducts.
- Bag debris as you cut. Do not let a pile dry and then kick it.
What you are actually breathing
Sewage organisms, mold starting on wet paper, fiberglass slivers, and silt. A humid closed ranch concentrates it.
N95 or better, fit-checked, is the floor for dusty demo. A bandana is a costume.
If you start coughing, get to clean air. Call a clinician if breathing stays ugly. Poison Control is not the first stop for dust, but 911 is if you cannot catch your breath.
The air handler problem
Houston systems run almost every day. If the return is in a wet hallway, you will decorate every room with the work.
Cover returns. Do not run the fan ‘for comfort’ during demo. Clean or replace filters after the wet work, and be ready for a duct conversation if the system sucked flood air.
Sleep somewhere else if the house still smells like a pond at dusk. That smell is information.
Health over a closed wall
CDC’s flood cleanup page and EPA’s mold page both treat wet cavities as a health job, not a weekend bleach project. If anyone in the house starts coughing or wheezing, get them out of the work zone. A TDLR mold assessor is the Texas license to look up when a company wants to diagnose and remediate in the same breath.
