The toilet gurgled and then the tub had company. After a Houston flood, sanitary lines surcharge. That is sewage in the house, even if you want a gentler word.
Stop showers, washing machines, and dishwashers. You are adding volume to a line that already lost the argument.
This is not a mop-and-candle job. It is extraction, removal of soaked porous material, and a plumber when the streets can take it.
Do this now
- Move people and pets out of the affected rooms. Wear boots and gloves if you must step in.
- Stop using every drain in the house.
- If waste is still coming in, call a plumber or 311 / your utility if a public main is overflowing.
- Photograph the cleanout, the fixtures, and the spread before you push it around.
What you can do in the first hour
If you have a cleanout cap that is already off and geysering, do not sit on it. If you can safely let it relieve outside instead of in the tub, that is a conversation with a plumber, not a Facebook hack.
Bag anything that soaked: bathmats, toilet paper piles, cardboard. Those are trash.
Open windows if the air is heavy and it is safe. Then call a restoration crew that will say ‘Category 3’ without you prompting them.
What not to do
Do not use a kitchen shop vac you plan to use for sawdust next month unless you are ready to ruin it and sanitize it as a sewage tool.
Do not mix bleach into a pool of waste in a closed room. Do not run the HVAC if it will blow that air through the whole house.
Ask the carrier about sewer-backup coverage. It is often a rider, not the flood policy, and not the standard homeowners page. The source matters.
Health over a closed wall
CDC’s flood cleanup page and EPA’s mold page both treat wet cavities as a health job, not a weekend bleach project. If anyone in the house starts coughing or wheezing, get them out of the work zone. A TDLR mold assessor is the Texas license to look up when a company wants to diagnose and remediate in the same breath.
Do this next
- Floodwater categories: clean, gray, and black water
- Respiratory risk while tearing out wet materials
- Water cleanup hub
